BIBU Talk 18th of May 2019

Urban Peripheries, Communal Bubbles, No-go zones? Finnish, Swedish and Russian Suburban Estates in a Comparative Context

1967 . Kontula.

Saturday May 18th 2019 5 pm
Kontula Electronic 2019 Festival, Kontula Shopping Centre (Ostostie 4), Luuppi Youth Activity Centre

This BIBU Talk will provide an in-depth view of the suburban realities by researchers based in Malmö, Helsinki and St. Petersburg.

Suburban estates have occupied an ambivalent position in urban geographies throughout their history. Situated in the grey area between the city and the countryside, urban anonymity and strong sense of community, they are rarely visited by outsiders but their reputation has reached far and wide.

At the event, we aim to establish a comparative perspective on the different trajectories of urban transformation in Finland and its neighbouring countries. All speakers have studied socio-spatial development, formation of communities and solidarities and the questions related to segregation.

Professor Per-Markku Ristilammi (Malmö University) has concentrated on the changes in Malmö’s Rosengård and construction of alterity in the city since the 1990s, Professor Venla Bernelius (Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies / Urbaria) is an urban geographer whose work has focussed especially on segregation and schools and Dr. Olga Tkach (Centre for Independent Social Research / St. Petersburg) has conducted long-term ethnographic research about neighbour relations in the high-rise residential complexes on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.

The event will be chaired by BIBU researcher Dr. Pekka Tuominen. Tuominen has been studying the urban transformation of Kontula anthropologically and is one of the organizers of the Kontula Electronic festival.

The Deputy Mayor for Urban Environment Anni Sinnemäki will join the session for her comments on the topic.

The program for Kontula Electronic can be found at the festival's website.

BIBU Talk 2nd of May

European Elections in Flux

The 2019 elections to the European Parliament are unusual for the suspense and tension associated with them. European elections are often low intensity, low information elections. Not this time!

The 2019 elections to the European Parliament are unusual for the suspense and tension associated with them. European elections are often low intensity, low information elections. Not this time!

Just weeks out from the election, Brexit remains unresolved and continues to dominate the EU agenda. Populist parties of the left and right are expected to make significant gains and importantly, may engage in unprecedented cooperation across the ideological spectrum, challenging established power relations. Concern is widespread that there is an increased risk of both physical and digital electoral harassment, from inside and outside EU states.

The rise of nativism and nationalism are clear to see in opinion polls and support levels for populist parties, European Parliament elections are usually contested on the basis of domestic politics, yet transnational issues like climate change and migration are more vital than ever. But it is unlikely that EU collaboration on these issues will emerge in the course of the upcoming campaign.

There are many big questions on the horizon: How will EU democratic structures perform in these challenging conditions? Can voters still trust the integrity and fairness of elections? What kind of electoral surprises could be expected?

In the forthcoming BIBU Talk, Dr. Theresa Reidy will address these issues based on her extensive academic research and practical experience from monitoring electoral integrity. Reidy's speech will be followed by comments from Professor in Practice Jarno Limnell (Aalto University) who is specialized in cyber security and democratic harassment. The Talk will be chaired by Professor in political science and BIBU work package leader Hanna Wass (University of Helsinki).

Dr. Theresa Reidy is a political scientist and an editor of the International Political Science Review in the Department of Government at University College Cork. Reidy's research interests lie in the areas of electoral behaviour and political institutions. Recently, Reidy was leading a comparative project on voter facilitation and engagement practices funded by the European Commission. Reidy has given expert evidence to parliamentary committees, the Constitutional Convention of Ireland and the Citizens’ Assembly of Ireland is also a regular contributor to national and international media. Reidy has also been involved in electoral monitoring around the world.

Siksi kansalaistoimintaan liittyykin paljon avoimia kysymyksiä, esimerkiksi:

  • Miten yhdistyslakia pitäisi muuttaa kansalaistoiminnan helpottamiseksi?
Pitäisikö esimerkiksi sosiaalisessa mediassa toimivan harrasteryhmän voida varata harjoitustiloja ja hakea tukia toiminnalleen?
  • Tarvitaanko järjestötoiminnankin alimmalle tasolle yksinkertaista kerhomuotoa tai muu vastaava?
  • Mitä hyötyä tai haittaa olisi yksinkertaisemmasta kerhomuodosta tai muista vastaavista malleista?
  • Riittävätkö yhdistyslaki, some ja muut verkkopalvelut kehittyvälle kansalaistoiminnalle?

Thursday April 25 2019 4 pm
Musiikkitalo, terassilämpiö (Mannerheimintie 13 A)

The support for radical right-wing parties in many European countries has been on the rise for the last decade. Sweden and Finland are not exceptions in this regard.

The support for radical right-wing parties in many European countries has been on the rise for the last decade. Sweden and Finland are not exceptions in this regard.

This BIBU Talk addresses the success of these parties. What has made the Sweden Democrats and the Finns Party successful and what does their future look like? How much do the parties resemble each other and other European radical right parties?

A leading scholar of radical right-wing parties, Professor Jens Rydgren (Stockholm University) considers the past, present and future of the Sweden Democrats.

Rydgren is the editor of The Oxford Handbook of the Radical Right (2018), and he has been a commentator on the radical right for many years.

Li Andersson, the leader of the Left Alliance, Academy Research Fellow Oula Silvennoinen (Helsinki University) and Doctoral Candidate Niko Hatakka (Turku University) will join the discussion with commentaries on the Finnish developments.

BIBU Talk is chaired by Professor of Political Science Hanna Wass (Helsinki University).
