Europe is currently in a transitional period. The ongoing post-industrial economic and technological transformation is weakening our established societal, political, and cultural structures. Meanwhile, key 21st-century challenges including climate change, socio-economic inequalities, and external authoritarian pressure are creating instability across the continent.
The scenarios of the paper were created as a synthesis of the Finnish BIBU research project (2017-22), which studies the impact of the socio-economic transformation on our political systems, and responses to it. A report in Finnish focusing on the future of the Finnish welfare state and democracy was published alongside this volume.
Kansalaisuuden kuilut ja kuplat (BIBU) -hanke on tuottanut laajasti tutkittua tietoa siitä, mitä suomalaiselle demokratialle ja hyvinvointimallille kuuluu globaalien murrostrendien keskellä. Julkaisun skenaarioiden tavoitteena on koota tätä tutkimusta yhteen laajalle yleisölle sekä viedä keskustelua demokratian tulevaisuudesta uusiin suuntiin.
This live, event discusses the launch of new research & grassroots initiatives to support democracies in realising societal transformations.
Introduction:
Europe is currently in a period of transition. The ongoing post-industrial economic and technological transformation are weakening our established societal and political structures. Meanwhile, key 21st-century challenges including climate change, economic inequality, and authoritarian pressures are creating instability across the continent, manifesting as growing political distrust, polarization and extremism. Now the invasion of (authoritarian) Russia in Ukraine has initiated a new phase in the discourse on the value of democracy – and why we have to work very hard to have democratic futures for our societies.
Democracy for the next era event combines the bird’s eye view with the grassroots initiatives to support democracies in realising societal transformations. The event celebrates the launch of the scenario report on the future of liberal democracy. The scenario work is a part of Tackling Biases and Bubbles in Participation -project, led by the University of Helsinki and funded by the Strategic Research Council by the Academy of Finland (2017-2022).

Miksi tyytymättömyys politiikkaan lisääntyy Suomessa ja Ruotsissa?
Viime vuosikymmeninä tyytymättömyys politiikkaan on lisääntynyt vahvasti. Uudet äärioikeistolaiset puolueet ovat saaneet vaalivoittoja kaikkialla Euroopassa, kun taas 1900-luvun vanhat puolueet ovat menettäneet jalansijaa. Globalisaatiota, maahanmuuttoa ja kansallista identiteettiä koskevat kysymykset ovat nousseet kansallisen politiikan etualalle.
Millaisia tunteita, kokemuksia ja ajatuksia tämän muutoksen takana on? Miksi ihmiset ovat niin kyllästyneitä siihen, miten asiat ovat?
Näitä kysymyksiä käsitellään Kalevi Sorsa -säätiön järjestämässä keskustelutilaisuudessa. Aiheesta keskustelevat ruotsalaisen ajatuspaja Arena Idén johtaja Lisa Pelling, joka on kirjoittanut Johanna Lindellin kanssa kirjan Det Svenska missnöjet (2021) sekä professori Anu Kantola, joka on toimittanut kirjan Kahdeksan kuplan Suomi (2022).
Keskustelu käydään englanniksi ja sen juontaa Kalevi Sorsa -säätiön eriarvoisuuden vähentämisen hankevastaava Anna Rajavuori. Lämpimästi tervetuloa!
